Agile Array ("Datacube") AnalyticsUnder the lead of Peter Baumann we focus on Array Databases, a research field we have pioneered since 1992: flexible, scalable services on large, multi-dimensional arrays, such as spatio-temporal sensor, image, simulation output, and statistics data - nowadays commonly also called "datacubes". We address this field in all its aspects, such as algebraic modelling, query languages, architectures, optimization, parallelization, distribution, new hardware, application, and standardization. Independently, we participate in novel intelligent learning concepts research. Applications are manifold: Earth, Space, and Life sciences, engineering and simulation, statistics, and business. All these domains suffer from "Big Data": as they are too big to transport them to the place they are needed, intelligent interfaces are required so that the desired results can be processed in place, on the server. Among the highlights of our activities are:
This work has been recognized by a series of awards. |
The rasdaman Array DBMSThe free, open-source rasdaman ("raster data manager") is the leading Array Database system. Effectively, rasdaman has pioneered this research field. See our publications. Rasdaman is mature and heavily used by data centers internationally on 100+ TB databases and by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecast, with 90+ PB the world's largest archive of meteorological data). Single queries have been successfully parallelized over 1,000+ cloud nodes.

Big Earth Data - The DocumentaryWe have initiated and scientifically advised production of the TV documentary "Big Earth Data" with Gruppe 5, financed jointly by German TV stations ZDF and ARTE as well as the European Commission as part of the EarthServer project.
