<p>
The <a href="http://www.jacobs-university.de/lsis">Large-Scale Scientific Information Systems group</a> is seeking excellent graduate students interested in pursuing a <b>PhD in Computer Science</b> in the area of array databases.
</p>
<p>
<b>Array databases</b> extend the relational model with query and storage support for large multi-dimensional arrays.
These occur, e.g., in the geo sciences as 1-D sensor time series, 2-D satellite maps, 3-D x/y/t image time series and x/y/z seismic data, and 4-D x/y/z/t climate / ocean modelling data. But also Life Sciences need array support, e.g., for 3-D/4-D brain images and gene expression data. "Large" in this context means Terabyte, Petabyte, and in future Exabyte sizes per single object.

Fully funded PhD positions are available on various topics, such as:

  <li>advanced image processing and analytics on massive array objects</li>
  <li>array databases for the Earth Sciences (as part of the <a href="http://www.earth-system-science.org">Helmholtz Earth Science Systems Research School</a> and in collaboration with the researchers and PhD students there)</li>
</ul>
<p>
Jacobs University has a strong reputation and leading position in array databases. Topics addressed in our research group encompass all aspects of array databases, such as theory (e.g., array algebrae), query languages, optimization, architectures (e.g., hw/sw parallelism, tape robot integration), benchmarking, and applications (e.g., geo, life science, astrophyics, Grid). Our research platform is rasdaman ("raster data manager"), the first and "most comprehensive" [Rona Machlin, ACM PoDS 2007] implementation of an array DBMS. Collaborations exist with geo and life science researchers worldwide. In the <a href="http://www.opengeospatial.org">Open GeoSpatial Consortium</a> we help shaping interoperable geo service standards.

Students will be funded for three years through an international project recently granted; in this time they are expected to complete their PhD. Additional funding - e.g., for conference trips - is available for students who achieve and maintain excellent performance.
</p>

<b>Requirements:</b> A strong background in computer science, willingness to work hard, and interest in research are all must-haves. A solid knowledge in Web/databases (including substantial programming experience) is also essential. Strong GRE scores and (if English is not a native language) good TOEFL scores are a plus.
